520 _aA series of five review articles describing the primary ceramic materials used in all-ceramic indirect restorations. Part 1 presents the history of dental ceramics, their classification based on microstructure—glass-matrix, glass-matrix with crystalline fillers, crystalline-matrix with glass fillers, and polycrystalline solids—as well as chemical composition, the ISO 6872 standard, and processing techniques: condensation, heat-pressing, and CAD/CAM milling. Parts 2 through 5 delve into specific materials: feldspathic ceramics, lithium disilicate, alumina, and zirconia. Each installment analyzes microstructure, optical and mechanical properties, clinical indications, tooth preparation design, material selection, and cementation protocols. The series aims to guide the clinician in selecting the most suitable material based on aesthetics, strength, anterior/posterior location, and occlusal load. Content by part: Part 1: Classification and processing of dental ceramics. -- Part 2: Feldspathic ceramics: excellent aesthetics, low strength; indicated for veneers and overlays; adhesive cementation with HF etching and silane. -- Part 3: Lithium disilicate: high aesthetics and strength; pressed or CAD/CAM; indicated for veneers, inlays/onlays, crowns, and short-span bridges; adhesive or conventional cementation. -- Part 4: Alumina: polycrystalline, good strength and limited aesthetics; uses include anterior restorations, short-span bridges, brackets, and implants; conventional cementation or cementation with surface treatments. -- Part 5: Zirconia: high-strength polycrystalline (Y-TZP 3Y/4Y/5Y), tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation; ideal for the posterior region; cementation with sandblasting and MDP primer; considerations regarding translucency, wear, and low-temperature degradation.
